Andromeda Transcultural Health Announces its First Annual HIV Fundraising Event: “Reflections of Life and Hope”
Washington, D.C., June 10th, 2008. Andromeda Transcultural Health’s Peer-Paraprofessional Group presents: the first annual fundraising event “Reflections of Life and Hope.” This event on July 25th at 6:30 pm includes an art exhibit, dance and vocal performances at Gala Theater, located in the Tivoli Plaza Building in the Northwest neighborhood of Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C.
The event will begin with the art exhibit presenting unique pieces made by members of Andromeda’s support groups. Appetizers are provided, prior to the performances. The night will include local talent’s musical numbers; show tunes and other Broadway stylings. Followed by: El Teatro de Danza contemporanea de El Salvador, a professional Salvadoran dance company (whose repertoire includes performances at the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian Institute and Tribeca Center in NYC). The evening will conclude with a performance by the DC Cowboys, an internationally acclaimed dance company that supports many HIV/AIDS events in the area.
This event is a reflection of Life and Hope. HIV/AIDS is a devastating illness that has consequences not only on one’s body, but also their sense of hope, and self-confidence. Programs such as Andromeda’s Peer-Paraprofessional group provide a space where participants can reconnect to their peers, build not only their knowledge of HIV/AIDS, but also their lives and self esteem.
The goal of this fundraising event is to receive support from the community, to further the goals of HIV/AIDS groups, organizations that support these groups, and to get as many supporters as possible to attend this event in support of the Latino and African-Americans community living with HIV/AIDS.
Andromeda Transcultural Health is a community-based organization that provides health services to the Hispanic/Latino and African-American community in the District. Founded by Dr. Ricardo Galbis, the primary mission is to provide access to quality healthcare under the premise, “that all humans are inherently of equal worth but have cultural and linguistic differences that must be considered”. This philosophy reflects a high level of community health care that has been validated by over three decades of direct services to minorities and underserved populations.
Currently, Andromeda’s participants are approximately 70% Hispanic, 22% African-American, and 8% other participants. As a non-profit organization 501-(c)(3) corporation all donations are tax-deductible. Andromeda is primarily funded through federal and local grants, totaling approximately 1.7 million dollars.
